AUTOMATED PHANTOM Analysis for Diagnostic Ultrasound

UltraiQ Software brings automated phantom image analysis to diagnostic ultrasound. 

Ultrasound quality assurance ensures system performance over time and catches degradation in image quality before it affects the diagnostic value of the clinical ultrasound exam.  Yet, establishing a QA program can be time consuming and cumbersome. Worse, many system parameters must be subjectively measured, resulting in a high degree of inter-observer variability.

UltraiQ solves these problems with easy-to-use software that can be purchased with either the Model 040GSE or Model 054GS. It objectively measures ultrasound image QA parameters and provides faster, more accurate assessments. UltraiQ quantitatively and automatically evaluates dynamic range, axial resolution, lateral resolution, caliper distance, dead zone, and depth of penetration.  

UltraiQ Software can be used with any ultrasound system. Customizable reporting and trending functions make it easy to monitor system performance over time. The intuitive user interface provides guidance for making measurements. After the initial set-up, subsequent measurements can be automatically performed within minutes.

Shear Wave Liver Fibrosis Phantom

MEASURE KNOWN TISSUE ELASTICITIES WITH SHEAR WAVE SYSTEMS 

The Shear Wave Liver Fibrosis Phantoms provide a set of reference standards for performing quantitative measurements of tissue stiffness. Shear wave elasticity imaging is an emerging biomarker with many possible applications, most prominently for determining the stage of liver fibrosis in a patient without the need for invasive biopsies.

The Shear Wave Liver Fibrosis Phantom includes four separate phantoms of varying stiffness: 3, 12, 27, and 48 kPa. The elasticity of the phantoms was chosen based on average tissue elasticty at various stages of liver fibrosis. Stiffness of 3 kPa represents elasticity of healthy tissue, while 48 kPa represents elasticity of tissue with stage-five liver fibrosis. Phantoms can also be manufactured according to user requirements with custom stiffness ranging from 1 to 100 kPa. 

Certification of Young’s modulus will be provided with each phantom for proof of measurements with a precision of +/- 4%. Young’s modulus is tested on batch samples following ASTM standard D575-91 to ensure accurate elasticity. Density will also be measured to allow accurate conversion of shear wave speed to shear wave modulus and Young’s modulus. 

The Shear Wave Liver Fibrosis Phantom comes with a carry case for easy transport and phantom set up.

Doppler String Phantom


Accurately simulates 16 physiological and test waveforms

The Doppler String Phantom is an essential tool for people who work with Doppler Ultrasound.  The crystal controlled motor accurately generates sixteen pre-programmed waveforms using advanced string target technology.  Since the speed is adjusted 1000 times every second, you know it's precise and repeatable.

The Doppler String Phantom can be set for use with water or velocity-corrected fluid.  If you're using water, it adjusts the string speed accordingly so the different speed of sound in water won't affect your tests.  And unlike fluid-flow phantoms, the target never changes; you know what your test results should be every time.

Doppler Ultrasound Flow Simulator

 

Perform Sensitivity and Velocity QA on Doppler Ultrasound

The Doppler Ultrasound Flow Simulator is designed to simulate blood flow in a tissue mimicking phantom, and may be used to perform quality assurance testing of Doppler ultrasound devices. The two most common tests are sensitivity and velocity accuracy, but a number of other useful tests are also described in the literature. 

The simulator includes a tissue-mimicking flow phantom with a blood-vessel-simulating, ultrasound-compatible tube that enters the phantom at an angle. The phantom has both a top and bottom scanning surface that allows testing at varying depths and angles of orientation. This makes the phantom suitable for testing both peripheral flow and deeper abdominal vessels. The phantom is filled with Zerdine® tissue mimicking gel with a speed of sound of 1540 m/s, an attenuation of 0.7 dB/cm/MHz and a backscatter contrast designed to match that of the liver. It is housed in rugged ABS plastic for added durability. Customers who wish to combine B-mode quality assurance features with Doppler testing may request customization of the phantom to include wire, greyscale and anechoic targets.

Blood Mimicking Fluid

The Blood Mimicking Fluid is intended for use in any flow phantom and with any type of pumping mechanism.  It was formulated to simulate the acoustic and physical characteristics of blood, thus providing a stable and reliable fluid for Doppler studies and system evaluations.

The fluid is non-hazardous and is formulated to meet the requirements for recommended blood-mimicking fluid as described in the IEC 1685 draft specifications.  The fluid is fully degassed prior to packaging to minimize noise from air bubbles.  In addition the scatters are neutrally buoyant thus preventing clumping and settling of the particles.  Each batch of fluid is tested for speed of sound, attenuation, density and viscosity traceable to NIS.

General Purpose Urethane Ultrasound Phantom

The General Purpose Urethane Ultrasound Phantom provides an alternative solution to tissue-equivalent quality assurance phantoms.  It is ideal for monitoring system performance over time.

The General Purpose Urethane Ultrasound Phantom is constructed from a proprietary urethane matrix and housed within a rigid PVC container with three separate scanning windows.  The three scan windows allow the same targets to be imaged at multiple depths, thus increasing the functionality of the phantom and minimizing size.

Inside the phantom, there are five test target groups: vertical plane targets, horizontal plane targets, axial resolution targets, lateral resolution targets, and stepped masses.  These target groups allow assessment of depth of penetration, uniformity, distance calibration, resolution and lesion detectability.

Brachytherapy QA Phantom

A robust quality assurance prostate brachytherapy QA program is essential to ensure accurate image guidance and dosimetry calculations. The Brachytherapy QA Phantom used in conjunction with the Ultrasound Prostate Phantom offers a complete solution for implementing a QA program specific to transrectal ultrasound used for guidance of prostate brachytherapy as recommended by AAPM Task Group 128.

The Brachytherapy QA Phantom is designed to enable users to check key imaging parameters such as depth of penetration, axial and lateral resolution, distance measurements, area measurements, volume measurements and geometric consistency with the treatment planning computer. When scanning towards the top of the phantom, a partial grid of wires appears. This N-shaped pattern should line up with the electronic grid that appears on your screen thus ensuring correct vertical and horizontal distance measurements. This target group can also be used to assess axial and lateral resolution of the system. Five cross wires are embedded within the phantom to determine if the probe is being retracted by the stepper system by the specified distance.

Ultrasound Resolution Phantom

Designed for evaluating system resolution

The Ultrasound Resolution Phantom is an ultrasound QA tool for simultaneous assessment of axial, lateral and elevational resolution. The phantom is constructed from the patented solid elastic material, Zerdine® and is housed in a rugged ABS casing. Zerdine accurately simulates the ultrasound characterisitcs of human liver tissue.

The Ultrasound Resolution Phantom consists of two planes of short cylinders.  One plane has an attenuation coefficient of 0.5 dB/cm-MHz while the other is 0.7 dB/cm-MHz.  Each plane has two groups of targets.  The 12 mm diameter test objects have three contrasts with respect to the background enabling low contrast resolution assessment at many depths.   All other targets are anechoic.  To facilitate proper probe alignment, the Model 044 also contains a series of nylon targets.

Gray Scale Ultrasound Phantom

For evaluating resolving power as a function of depth, size, and contrast

The Gray Scale Ultrasound Phantom is a single, simple tool to assess resolution of masses varying in size, depth and contrast. The phantom’s unique design allows for rapid visualization of gray scale resolution power at continuous depths from 1 to 12 cm. Due to the controlled scatter characteristics of the targets, the Gray Scale Ultrasound Phantom may be used to evaluate gray scale sensitivity on all diagnostic ultrasound machines with a wide range of transducer frequencies. This phantom is an ideal training tool for learning optimum system setup and evaluating system performance. 

Masses may be viewed with either a circular or elliptical cross-section. The mass diameters were selected so the volume imaged would double as the diameter increased. The gray-scale levels were selected to achieve a doubling in signal intensity as you move from mass to mass. The anechoic masses comply with the ACR accreditation program. 

The phantom is constructed of Zerdine, a patented, tissue-mimicking material and is housed in a rugged ABS plastic for increased durability. The Gray Scale Ultrasound Phantom includes foam-lined carry case, certificate of compliance, user guide and 48-month warranty.

Elasticity QA Phantoms

Developed to provide users with Acoustic targets of Discrete known Stiffness

The Model 049 and 049A Elasticity QA Phantoms are tools developed for sonoelastography systems. These are the only phantoms commercially available for sonoelastography quality assurance. The phantom contains targets of known stiffness relative to the background material and range in stiffness, diameter and depth. The Elasticity QA Phantoms are suitable for determining the dynamic range of the system, checking system performance over time, demonstrating system features and training personnel and customers on this rapidly growing field. The phantoms can also be used by researchers developing and verifying new techniques.

The Model 049 is a basic QA phantom as it contains two sizes of spheres positioned at two different depths. At each depth there are two spheres that are softer than the background and two that are harder than the background. For a broader range of target sizes, the Model 049A is now available. The Model 049A has stepped mass targets instead of spheres. Each stepped mass consists of six diameters so that you can evaluate the ability to visualize targets that are located at the same depth and have the same relative stiffness but vary in diameter. The Model 049A is housed in the same size container as the original Model 049. Both phantoms come standard with a four-year warranty and a carry case.

The Small Parts Ultrasound Phantom features a compact design ideal for high-resolution imaging systems with a limited depth of penetration. The phantom allows for repeatable, qualitative assessment of uniformity, dead zone, depth of penetration, beam profile/focal zone/lateral response width, vertical distance measurement accuracy, axial resolution, lateral resolution, anechoic masses, high contrast masses, volumetric measurement accuracy, and focal lesion detectability.

The Small Parts Ultrasound Phantom is made up of a proprietary tissue-simulating material called Zerdine®, which accurately simulates the ultrasound characteristics found in human liver. A series of wire targets included in the Small Parts Ultrasound Phantom will appear as bright dots or lines on the ultrasound image. These targets are made from nylon with a diameter of 0.1 mm. The phantom also contains two known volumes, a 10 mm combination cyst-like/hyperechoic mass and anechoic focal lesions embedded within the phantom. These masses are made from Zerdine with a different contrast and attenuation relative to the background material.

Ultrasound Phantoms for 2D & 3D Evaluation

Designed for compliance with the AIUM

The Model 0555 Set consists of two phantoms, the Model 055 3D Ultrasound Calibration Phantom and 055A 3D Wire Test Object, as described in the AIUM publication “Standard Methods for Calibration of 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional Spatial Measurement Capabilities of Pulse Echo Ultrasound Imaging Systems”. These phantoms were designed to evaluate measurements taken on ultrasound systems using newer spatial encoding algorithms. This is especially important for the 3-D and 4-D ultrasound systems currently on the market.

Both phantoms are manufactured from the water-based polymer developed by CIRS called Zerdine® and housed in rugged ABS containers that minimize desiccation. The background is calibrated to mimic the ultrasound characteristics of human liver tissue. Unlike other phantom materials Zerdine is not damaged by changes in temperature.

The Model 055 3D Ultrasound Calibration Phantom is a volumetric target phantom and contains a small egg and a large egg. There are two scanning surfaces and the targets are off centered within the background material.

Depending upon what side is scanned, the test objects are located at distances ranging from 2 to 6 cm from the scanning surface.

The Model 055A 3D Wire Test Object is a wire-target phantom. In 2-D, the wires can be used to trace imaginary elliptical or rectangular shapes while, in 3D-mode, the same wire targets can trace out elliptical and/or rectangular rods. These are used to measure perimeters, volumes and surface areas. The phantom also can be used to determine image uniformity and depth of penetration.

The phantoms come with a carrying case a copy of the above referenced AIUM publication as a user’s guide and handling instructions.

Accreditation Phantom for Uniformity

Essential Component of a Routine QC Program

A continuous QC program identifies problems before they impact the diagnostic value of ultrasound exams and assures equipment is functioning properly. Research has demonstrated that the most common failure in the ultrasound imaging system is the transducer as they are easily damaged by stress, dropping and kinked cables1. Accreditation programs now recommend all scanners and all transducers be tested quarterly and must be tested at least semiannually by performing an image uniformity and artifact survey2

The Model 551, Accreditation Phantom for Uniformity, aids appropriately trained personnel in identifying the presence of lateral and/or axial streaks, i.e. artifacts, on any ultrasound transducer. Presence of artifacts is an indication of transducer damage and triggers corrective action. 

The phantom consists of a uniform block of Z-SkinTM that is elastic enough to conform to any shape transducer. Z-Skin is durable enough to withstand the probe pressure to maintain coupling with all the elements of even the tightest curvilinear arrays. 

The Model 550 package, which includes both the Accreditation Phantom for Uniformity and the Accreditation Phantom for Geometric Accuracy, enables cost-effiective testing of all parameters requiring the use of a phantom for accreditation.
