Introduction
HERA Z20 for practices built around prenatal and gynaecological imaging, V8 for mixed practices: how the two Samsung systems differ in imaging, workflow, footprint and price tier.
In short: The Samsung HERA Z20 is built for gynaecology and obstetrics: it is the choice for practices whose day is mostly prenatal and gynaecological imaging and who want the most advanced 3D/4D and AI-assisted obstetric workflows. The Samsung V8 is the choice for practices that combine gynaecology with abdominal, thyroid, breast or musculoskeletal exams, or that want a premium general imaging system at a lower price tier. Meditron SA, the official Samsung Healthcare distributor in Switzerland, installs and supports both.
Key takeaways
HERA Z20 = dedicated women's health platform; V8 = premium all-rounder that also does gynaecology well.
The deciding question is the share of your exams that is obstetric and gynaecological. Above roughly two thirds, HERA Z20; below, V8.
Both take endocavity and volume probes; both offer 2D, 3D/4D, colour Doppler and elastography.
HERA Z20 needs more floor space (62.5 × 93.5 cm) than the V8 (55.9 × 96.4 cm) and sits in the premium price tier.
Many two-room practices run one of each: HERA Z20 for prenatal diagnostics, V8 for everything else.

How do the Samsung HERA Z20 and V8 compare?
HERA Z20 | V8 | |
|---|---|---|
Designed for | Gynaecology and obstetrics | General imaging: abdomen, women's health, MSK, vascular |
Monitor | 27" OLED, 15.6" touch | 23.8" LED (optional 27" OLED), 14" touch |
Footprint (W × D) | 62.5 × 93.5 cm | 55.9 × 96.4 cm |
Imaging | 2D, 3D/4D and colour imaging tuned for women's health | Crystal Architecture™ imaging with Intelligent Assist |
Automation | AI-assisted obstetric and gynaecological workflows that take over routine measurements | Intelligent Assist tools for short exam times across applications |
Probes | Convex, linear, endocavity, volume | Convex, linear, endocavity, volume, sector |
Price tier | Premium | Mid-range to premium, depending on configuration |
Best for | Practices and clinics focused on prenatal and gynaecological imaging | Mixed practices, group practices, second system |
Both systems share Samsung's core imaging modes: 2D, M-mode, colour, PW and CW Doppler, tissue Doppler, ElastoScan, 3D/4D and dual and quad display. Specifications as published by Samsung Healthcare; see the HERA Z20 and V8 product pages.
Who is the Samsung HERA Z20 for?
The HERA Z20 is for physicians whose work is women's health, most of the day, every day. Samsung developed the platform for gynaecology and obstetrics: the imaging modes, the presets, the measurement packages and the AI-assisted workflows are tuned to prenatal screening, fetal biometry, gynaecological assessment and follow-up. That shows in three ways:
Prenatal imaging. 2D, 3D/4D and colour imaging built around the obstetric exam, with automation that takes routine measurements off the operator.
Throughput. A practice doing many obstetric exams a day saves minutes per exam through presets and automated measurements. Over a year that is days of clinic time.
Patient experience. The 27-inch OLED monitor and 3D/4D imaging matter to expectant parents, and many practices use them as a differentiator.
Typical users: obstetric and gynaecological practices, prenatal diagnostics centres, women's clinics and hospital obstetric departments.
Who is the Samsung V8 for?
The V8 is Samsung's premium general imaging system. It does gynaecology well, with endocavity and volume probes and 3D/4D, but its strength is breadth: abdomen, thyroid, breast, vascular and musculoskeletal on the same console with the same short exam times. Choose the V8 when:
Gynaecology is one part of a mixed caseload. A general practitioner with a gynaecology certificate, an internist who also does women's health, or a group practice where several specialties share the room.
You want premium imaging at a lower price tier. A well-configured V8 costs less than a HERA Z20 with a comparable probe set.
Space is tight. The V8 is narrower (55.9 cm) and fits rooms where the HERA Z20 would not.
It is the second system. Many practices pair a HERA Z20 in the obstetric room with a V8 in the general room.
Which probes do gynaecology and obstetrics need?
Whichever console you choose, the probe set decides the exams you can do and a large share of the price:
Endocavity probe for gynaecological and early-pregnancy exams. Essential in both cases.
Convex probe for second- and third-trimester obstetrics and abdominal exams.
Volume probe (3D/4D) for fetal surface imaging and gynaecological volume assessment. Standard on a HERA Z20 configuration, optional on the V8.
Linear probe for breast, thyroid and vascular exams. More relevant on a V8 in a mixed practice.
Meditron configures the probe set together with you on the basis of the exams you actually perform.
Which system fits which practice profile?
Practice profile | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
Obstetric and gynaecological practice, prenatal diagnostics daily | HERA Z20 | Dedicated obstetric workflows and automation; 3D/4D as standard |
Gynaecology plus breast, thyroid or abdomen | V8 | Breadth across applications; linear probe for breast and thyroid |
Group practice, several specialties share the room | V8 | One console covers all users; short exam times in every application |
Hospital obstetric department with high volume | HERA Z20 | Throughput and consistency across operators |
Two rooms: obstetrics and general | HERA Z20 + V8 | Each room gets the system built for its exams; shared probe formats |
Starting practice, budget-limited | V8 (or certified pre-owned) | Lower entry price; can be upgraded or complemented later |
What about price tier, space and financing?
There are no list prices; the configuration sets the price. As a rule, the HERA Z20 sits in the premium tier and the V8 in the mid-range to premium tier, with the probe set and software packages deciding the rest. The HERA Z20 needs roughly 63 × 94 cm of floor space plus room to move, the V8 roughly 56 × 96 cm. Both can be purchased or leased through Meditron, and certified pre-owned systems are available subject to stock. Read more in how much a Samsung ultrasound system costs in Switzerland.
